Porous paving helps trees

The benefits of Root Pave

Driveways

The product is recommended to be used for light vehicles and occasional rigid delivery trucks to a maximum of 5-tonne weight. The thickness needs to be engineered for the application but in most cases, the paving thickness needs to be about 80mm with a 100mm thick under layer of drainage aggregate. This would be suitable for a domestic or strata driveway. The drainage aggregate should be clean no fines material that allows the free flow of water to migrate to the sub ground or is collected via a system of buried ag drains that direct the water to retention or detention tanks. Where the water is required to replenish the sub ground there should be sufficient trees with established root systems adjacent to the paving to extract the water from the pavement.

Footpaths

The most common design for a suburban footpath application is 40mm thick Root Pave over a 50mm thick blue metal sub-base. Recycled concrete aggregates can be used but generally, these come with too many fines which cement up and impede the flow over time. Also, cement products will change the acidity of the soil as well.

Elizabeth St between Elizabeth and Hay St Sydney. Porous Pavement installed by Collective Civil 2012 for the City of Sydney. This footpath gets a lot of foot traffic every day is still performing well No Cracks and still very porous.

Car Parks

The product needs to be carefully designed in the areas where there is heavy screwing of tyres associated with vehicles turning sharply into car parks. Collective Civil will design the pavement for the applied loads and ongoing maintenance of the surface.

Over waterproof membranes on roof tops

If the rooftop is only being traversed by occasional foot traffic and weight on the roof structure is a consideration, then the porous paving Root Pave TM can be applied as thin as 25 to 30mm. Collective Civil can apply the rubber membrane and install the paving to the rooftop to provide an economical and durable alternative to the use of bitumen sealers and loose stone.

Rooftop garden surrounds

Rooftop gardens are designed to be used by pedestrian and the same design applies as for normal footpaths. Collective Civil completed a large rooftop experiment area for the University of Wollongong in 2013.

Tree Surrounds

Collective Civil recommends the same design as for footpaths. Collective Civil Porous paving is finished to a high standard to minimise any trip hazard around trees in the footpath. Where the roots of an existing tree protrude above the level of the surrounding footpath the porous paving has the ability to be laid directly over the root in some cases but mostly is laid up to the root with an allowance space of 20 mm provided for the future growth of the tree trunk and roots.
The polyurethane binder granule rubber and stone materials are completely inert and safe to stormwater and waterways and above all to the tree. No turbidity is added to stormwater that passes through the product.
It is not recommended to apply porous paving around new trees directly after planting. The root ball must be established for a recommended 1 year after planting.

This Root Pave tree surround is performing better than the terracotta pavers around it. Even with many cars driving over it every day in Fitzroy St Surrey Hills Sydney

Application and installation recommendations

Installation step process for existing trees to maximise the health and water absorption after a rain event:

Warranty

Collective Civil will provide a warranty on workmanship subsidence and product unravelling for 1 year for established trees which have been undisturbed for at least 2 years. Some subsidence may occur between pavers and adjacent porous paving if the area has been disturbed recently and not properly consolidated. Each site will be assessed and warranty applied after installation.

The root paving team

Collective Civil has a dedicated team to install root pave. With 8 years of experience we know what we are doing. Your in good hands with a team that work safely and have all the permits required to work in the busy city or the work site anywhere anytime.
